WHY?
All pretty straight forward really.
Sort of.
KJ, my 14-year old daughter, had been selected to represent Hampshire at the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Thailand and needed to raise some dosh. I was approaching a big um-err, "aren't policemen looking young", and had itchy feet for a challenge. The E2E simply seemed a reasonable idea. And it was just one of those things I'd never got around to.
We both think too much is made of it as a so-called 'challenge' - its really a 2 - 3 week cycle tour which we have done many times before, so no support, no high-tech satelite tracking, just a tent, sleeping bags, some pots and pans and the bikes. Simplicity and independence really is the best way.
Then four months before setting off the wrist gave way - too much mouse work. Mileage was down to the two mile weekly ride on the Brompton to the hospital for treatment - heat treatment, ultrasound, electric shocks, the lot. Nothing worked and riding was painful. But we had committed ourselves.
This was a damn fine reason to move to the Dark Side and buy that recumbent trike tho' (big grin), but in the end I still took my trusty Roberts and wore a splint. It was hoped the tendons would heal over the trip. They improved and the splint was removed after 10 days.
