WE MADE IT
John o'Groats
1003 miles total, 29th August
The wind is really up now - typical; its only three miles to go! Flew along to John o'Groats arriving before the tourist coaches and crossed the famous line at 9.30am. KJ immediately announced she wanted to do the ride again with one proviso - no more slugs invading the tent!
Took a couple of pics for motorcyclists at the sign and they took pics of us! Then explored. Although elated, what a dump. A few souvenir huts, a burger waggon, an overpriced tea room with stale cakes and a WC that wanted 20p. Coaches arrived, disgorging pasty-looking people carrying camera bags and tartan hats - doing Scotland in a day. Somehow we felt quite divorced from this cheapo land of plastic and tat.
11.00am and the first beer for nearly three weeks was enjoyed in the hotel bar where we signed the famous book.
It was slowly sinking in that we had finished, we had completed the length of the country, following in the wheels of many others - adventurers, people with their own goals, and even the odd nutter. The E2E is truly part of Britain's heritage, evoking some kind of magical aura and we pedalled off with a sense of pride.
1003 miles without a pint. Where's the bar? |
